    Frequently asked questions

How long does aged care approval take?
Approval time varies, but most people receive assessment results within 2–6 weeks after their ACAT assessment. Urgent cases may be prioritised sooner depending on needs.

I have been approved a Support At Home Package. What happens now?
Once approved, you will be put on a National Waitlist. You will receive a confirmation letter outlining your funding level and services within 3-12 months. The next step is choosing a registered provider who will help create a care plan based on your needs. Services usually begin after you accept your package and agree on supports, schedules, and any required contributions.

I am not happy with my current Support At Home Provider. Can I switch providers?
Yes. You can change providers if your needs change or you are unhappy with your current services.

I can’t afford the contributions for my Support at Home services. Is there a way to get help?
Yes. If you are experiencing financial difficulty, you may be able to apply for financial hardship assistance through Services Australia. This involves completing a financial hardship application, which allows the government to review your circumstances and potentially reduce or waive your required contributions. Your aged care provider can help you start this process and guide you through the paperwork.

What is the difference between a small provider and a larger aged care provider?
Both small and large providers deliver government-funded aged care services, but the experience can feel different.
Larger providers may offer wider coverage areas, larger teams, and more structured systems. However, clients may see different staff members more often due to higher workforce numbers.
Smaller or boutique providers typically support fewer clients, which can allow for more personalised care, consistent support workers, and closer communication with care coordinators. Many families value the relationship-focused approach and flexibility that smaller providers can offer.
The best provider is one that understands your needs, communicates clearly, and delivers reliable, quality care.
